Inauguration 2009

What should we be doing in Upper School to commemorate the Inauguration?

If we could do it in a way that would be about underscoring the historical significance of the event, I would like for students to be able to watch it live. Thoughts?

It's clearly an historic election, and yet I wonder if we'd be doing anything about the inaguration if a Republican had been elected. Would families that didn't support Obama or the Democrats feel funny about this ? There's a part of me that feels uncomfortable wading into politics with the kids as a faculty, and another part that feels it is a great opportunity for kids to witness an historic moment.

Since the inauguration comes directly after the MLK Day celebrations, I feel that it does seem appropriate to view this particular president's signing-in ceremony in a different fashion. While we wouldn't have necessarily made such a big deal if John McCain had been elected, we wouldn't have done so either with another white male Democratic victor. Unless they forgot everything over the winter break, I believe that the 8th graders will have the proper historical perspective to view this as a truly historic occasion.
